Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
