Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in all modern cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
