Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
