European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
